Hired by cities to treat as many patients as possible, they were beginners or low-ranking physicians willing to take risks to build their reputation.
In close contact with plague victims, they were highly exposed to the disease at their own peril. In the 17th century they were recognizable by their hat and their plague mask, shaped like a bird's beak — most often resembling a crow.
The mask was designed to be filled with aromatic herbs meant to block dangerous effluvia, according to the miasma theory of the time.
